Frequently Asked Questions
UNDERSTANDING HALSONUS
What makes Halsonus different from other aromatherapy products?
Halsonus approaches scent as a functional part of your environment. Founded by a psychotherapist, our formulas are informed by psychology, neuroscience, aromatherapy, and sensory design.
Rather than creating fragrance simply to smell good, each blend is designed around a specific state or function, giving you a simple sensory tool to support how you want to feel and function throughout the day.
What does "for aromatic use only" mean?
Halsonus products are designed to be experienced through scent.
When essential oils evaporate into the air, their volatile aromatic molecules enter the nose and interact with olfactory receptors. This is a very different route and level of exposure from swallowing an essential oil or applying a concentrated oil directly to the skin.
Our bottled essential oil blends are highly concentrated and undiluted. They are intended for use with an appropriate diffuser or passive scenting method, not for ingestion or direct application to the body.
With aromatherapy, more is not necessarily better. A subtle amount of scent is enough to create an aromatic environment.
INGREDIENTS + FORMULATION
What ingredients does Halsonus leave out?
We keep our formulas intentionally simple. Halsonus products are scented exclusively with 100% essential oils, with no synthetic fragrance oils, artificial fragrance, carrier oils, or filler ingredients.
Our candles are made with a plant-based wax blend and contain no paraffin wax.
What you smell comes from the naturally occurring aromatic compounds in the plants themselves.
Why does Halsonus use essential oils?
Essential oils are more than fragrance. They are complex mixtures of volatile compounds produced by plants, and research suggests that some of these compounds can influence mood, attention, memory, relaxation, and other aspects of our experience through olfaction.
We choose essential oils based on both their aromatic character and what current research suggests about their functional properties.
The science is not equally established for every oil or every proposed effect, which is why we distinguish between what research supports and what is still emerging.
USING HALSONUS
How do I use Halsonus essential oil drops?
Our essential oil blends are highly concentrated and intended for aromatic use only.
Add a small number of drops to an appropriate diffuser according to the diffuser manufacturer's instructions. Start with less than you think you need, particularly in a smaller room, and adjust based on the size of your space and your own sensitivity.
Do not apply directly to skin or ingest. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
How much essential oil should I diffuse?
There isn't one ideal amount for every room or person. Room size, ventilation, diffuser type, blend, and individual sensitivity all affect scent intensity.
Start with a small amount and increase only if needed. The goal isn't to fill every corner of a room with fragrance. A subtle aromatic environment is enough.
Can I mix Brain Wave blends together?
We don't recommend it. Each Brain Wave blend was formulated as a complete composition with a specific function and aromatic profile.
Can I use Halsonus oils in any diffuser?
Halsonus essential oil blends are intended for diffusers designed for use with pure essential oils. Always follow the instructions provided by your diffuser manufacturer, since different types of diffusers have different requirements.
Our oils should not be added to devices that are not specifically designed for essential oil use.
SAFETY + SENSITIVITY
Are Halsonus products safe for daily use?
Essential oils are concentrated mixtures of naturally occurring aromatic compounds. Their effects and safety depend on the specific oil, how much is used, how it enters the body, and individual sensitivity.
For everyday aromatic use, more is not necessarily better. Start with a low scent intensity, allow for ventilation, and pay attention to how your body responds.
Headache, coughing, eye or airway irritation, nausea, or discomfort are signs to stop and get fresh air.
Our concentrated essential oil blends are not intended for ingestion or direct application to the skin. Keep bottles away from the eyes and securely out of reach of children and pets.
What about allergies and scent sensitivity?
Halsonus products are made with essential oils, which contain naturally occurring aromatic compounds. Natural doesn't mean non-allergenic. Some of these compounds can cause irritation or sensitivity in certain people.
Scent response is highly individual. What feels subtle or grounding to one person may feel intense to another. If you're prone to headaches, asthma symptoms, allergies, or fragrance sensitivity, start with a low scent intensity, use for shorter periods, provide good ventilation, and pay attention to how your body responds.
Essential oil drops offer more control over scent intensity because you choose how many drops to diffuse and for how long.
Halsonus uses 100% essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance oils, but both natural and synthetic aromatic materials can cause sensitivity. If you experience headache, coughing, wheezing, eye or airway irritation, skin irritation, nausea, or other discomfort, discontinue use and get fresh air.
Trust your system. You're the expert on your body.
Can I use Halsonus products during pregnancy?
Pregnancy does not automatically mean avoiding all essential oils. It also isn't scientifically accurate to say that every essential oil is safe during pregnancy.
Essential oils are chemically complex, and safety depends on the specific oil, its constituents, concentration, amount used, and route of exposure. A lightly scented room creates a very different exposure from swallowing an essential oil or repeatedly applying concentrated oil to the body.
Some essential oils warrant greater caution during pregnancy. Professional aromatherapy safety guidance recommends avoiding oils including pennyroyal, wormwood, thuja, tansy, common sage, wintergreen, camphor, and parsley seed because of their chemical composition and known or theoretical safety concerns.
Halsonus does not currently formulate with these pregnancy-contraindicated oils.
That doesn't mean we label our products "pregnancy safe." Human pregnancy research on many essential oils remains limited, and individual circumstances matter.
Halsonus products are intended for aromatic use only. Our concentrated essential oil blends should never be ingested or applied undiluted to the skin. If you are pregnant or nursing, we recommend reviewing the ingredients of the specific blend you'd like to use with your healthcare provider.
Can I use Halsonus products around children?
Children aren't simply smaller adults. Their smaller body size and developing respiratory and metabolic systems mean that concentrated essential oils require additional care, particularly around babies and very young children.
How an essential oil is used matters. The greatest concerns involve accidental ingestion, direct application of concentrated oils, and highly concentrated exposure close to the face and airways. Halsonus products are designed for environmental aromatic use only, never for ingestion or direct application to a child.
Some essential oils also have age-specific considerations. BETA, for example, contains menthol-rich cornmint. Menthol warrants additional caution around the faces and airways of infants and very young children. Other essential oils can have their own age-specific considerations, which is why we don't describe essential oils broadly as "safe for children."
When using Halsonus around children, keep the scent subtle, provide good ventilation, and avoid placing a diffuser or candle immediately beside a child. Keep essential oil bottles and diffusers securely out of reach, and never allow a child to ingest an essential oil or apply our concentrated blends directly to their skin or face.
Infants, very young children, and children with asthma, respiratory conditions, epilepsy, or other medical considerations may require additional precautions. If you're unsure about a particular blend, we list every ingredient so you can review it with your pediatrician.
Can I use Halsonus products around pets?
In many homes, aromatic products can be used thoughtfully around healthy dogs and cats, but animals experience and metabolize aromatic compounds differently than humans, so a few precautions matter.
Halsonus products are made for people and spaces, not for use directly on animals. Never apply concentrated essential oils to your pet, add them to food or water, or allow oils to get onto fur or paws where they may be absorbed or ingested during grooming.
How you scent a space matters, too. Candles and passive diffusers primarily release volatile aromatic molecules into the air. Ultrasonic and nebulizing diffusers can also release microscopic oil droplets, creating additional opportunities for inhalation, skin contact, and ingestion through grooming.
If you use aromatic products around a healthy dog or cat, keep the scent subtle, provide good ventilation, and always give your pet the freedom to move away from the scent into an unscented area. Animals have a much more sensitive sense of smell than we do, so what feels subtle to us may not feel subtle to them.
Cats warrant additional caution because they metabolize certain essential oil compounds differently than humans and dogs. Birds are particularly sensitive to fragrances and airborne particles because of their unique respiratory systems, so we recommend avoiding essential oil diffusion around birds altogether.
Pets with asthma, respiratory conditions, or other health concerns may require additional precautions. We also don't describe any essential oil blend as universally "pet safe." Risk depends on the specific oil, concentration, amount, method of exposure, species, and individual animal.
Most importantly, pay attention to your pet. If they consistently leave when you introduce a scent, don't force the exposure. Coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, watery eyes or nose, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, weakness, tremors, or unusual behavior are reasons to discontinue use and contact your veterinarian.
For additional guidance, we recommend speaking with your veterinarian and reviewing the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center's information on essential oils and pets.
CANDLE CARE
How should I care for my Halsonus candle?
Trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch before each burn. On the first burn, allow the wax to melt close to the edges of the vessel to help establish an even burn pattern.
We developed our own plant-based wax formula specifically for a slower burn, so settle in. A typical burn session may last 3 to 4 hours.
Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant coaster or plate to protect the surface beneath it. Keep away from drafts and anything flammable, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time. Allow the candle and vessel to cool completely before handling, moving, or relighting.
Discontinue use when approximately 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel.
Why does my candle wick sometimes mushroom?
Mushrooming is a small buildup of carbon at the tip of a candle wick. It can be influenced by wick size, burn duration, fragrance load, and other combustion conditions.
A small amount can occur during normal burning. Allow the candle to cool completely, then trim the carbon buildup before relighting. Regular wick trimming helps maintain a cleaner, more controlled flame.
Why does my candle sometimes sweat?
Small beads of oil can occasionally appear on the surface of a candle when some of the essential oil migrates out of the wax, often in response to temperature changes, storage conditions, or the natural characteristics of the wax and oil blend.
This does not necessarily mean the candle is defective. Allow the candle to return to a stable room temperature and gently blot any excess oil before lighting.
